DIY skin care basics

Though I only offer soaps on my website, I actually make lots of other skin care products... but only for personal use. The main reason I don't sell them is I want to avoid packaging and also, they are easy enough that anyone can make them...yes that's right you can too!

I thought I'd share 2 of the easiest recipes. One for deodorant and the other for a lotion bar.

Both require beeswax which is a staple in my DIY cupboard and pretty easy to find in any health store, as is arrowroot powder. Bicarbonate of soda and coconut oil are also easily found - try and make sure you're buying organic and sustainable. The mango butter is maybe not so common but can be substituted with other butters.

For the deodorant re-use an old stick deodorant tube. For the lotion bar any silicone mold or even a plastic container will do, though special bar shape molds are preferable.

Deodorant

30g grated beeswax, 50g coconut oil, 30g mango butter, 60g bicarbonate of soda, 60g arrowroot powder

Melt the beeswax, oil and butter. Next stir in the powders to get a homogenous texture. Pour into a deodorant tube.

Optional : at the last stage add a few drops of essential oils (palmarosa, clary sage, tea tree are great for their antibacterial and odour control properties)

Lotion bar

50g grated beeswax, 50g mango butter, 25g rosehip oil

Melt the beeswax and mango butter. Stir in the rosehip oil. Pour into mold.

Yes... it's as easy as that! So what are you waiting for?

I would love to hear back from you, especially if you have tried my recipe. How did it work out? Please feel free to send me questions too!
